STEM Girls United Conference - April 12, 2019
STEM Girls United Conference is a society project created, not only to enlighten, but motivate young girls to pursue STEM careers. When Mia-Marie Fields was a freshmen in high school, with her peers Nathina St. Felix and Isabella Taverez, she noticed the gap between male and females in STEM careers. They launched STEM Girls United in 2018 and it proved to be successful. This year, now Juniors in High School, the trio presented a truly remarkable conference for middle school girls from Driftwood and Apollo Middle Schools. The event featured women working in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to share their experiences and discuss what opportunities lie ahead as well as interactive workshops for the participants.
This group of young women deserve special recognition as they are leading the way to bridging the gap of females in STEM careers. They exhibit all the qualities that one should admire such as bravery, strength, and dedication to list a few. Looking forward to the contribution Mia-Marie, Nathina, and Isabella will make to the wonderful fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Girl Scout Outreach Program
Started in 2007 with the purpose to introduce engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration and advance knowledge about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
A key collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida (GSSEF) and the Jupiter Loxahatchee River Center led to the design of a workshop series based on the Girl Scout Eco-Action requirements. The first Eco-Action workshop, for Cadettes and Seniors, took place in 2009. With ERM Foundation Grants (2011-2015), we introduced additional Girl Scout levels (Daisy, Brownie, Junior) and started to design events based on the new Girl Scout “It’s Your Planet-Love It” curriculum.
We sincerely thank our program collaborators - the River Center and the ERM Foundation - and our numerous outreach event volunteers (SWE Professional, SWE FAU Collegiate, ERM, River Center, and Girl Scout) for their commitment to helping us produce our outreach program.

Gold Award Project: 3D Factory
We would like to recognize Alyssa Guariniello (Troop 10717) on being recognized at the 2017 Gold Award Ceremony presented by the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida on May 20, 2017. We first met Alyssa, as a Junior Girl Scout, when she attended one of our first Girl Scout Making it Matter workshops, with her Troop. Her project, 3D Factory, addressed a stronger need for students to learn more about different areas of STEM. She focused on increasing awareness of resources available in her school and the Museum of Discovery and Science for 3D printing and 3D modeling. She developed a workshop for students to learn more about these technologies and careers in the field. She hosted two workshops at the Museum of Discovery and Science, where she also designed pamphlets to educate others about STEM.
Disney for Change – Girl Scout Workshop
Working towards her Girl Scout Gold Award, Emily Tomchin (Troop 10717) was awarded a grant from Disney Friends for Change and held a STEM workshop on April 18, 2015. The event was attended by 40 girl scouts who enjoyed visiting four different stations; Tablet Programming, Gum Drop Domes, Goop and Counting Cookies Math Exercise. The SEFL SWE section participated by providing the gum drop domes kits and running the activity. In addition, Emily is working on a project to promote STEM education called Empowering Students Around The World. She has been collecting used tablets and will install educational software on the tablets for students. She will be sending a set of tablets to a school in Haiti and then will also provide a set to Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida for troops to use. At the event on April 18th shoes and school supplies for the Haitian school were also collected. SEFL SWE is very proud to be supporting Emily in her endeavors!
